when i finish all the things i need to do at work, i usually sketch in my tiny moleskin. a lot of them are characters from the novel i'm trying to write, or those two wartimehipsters characters that i just draw all the time. i'm also trying to forces myself to put characters into environments because that's really my big weakness. the photos are all taken with my phone shortly after i drew them, so don't mind the quality.

it's been forever since my last post, and for that i am sorry. i've just been so busy doing school work and going to my internship that i just haven't had the chance to upload anything. i've been working on my webcomic, but i don't want to post the pages in too many places or else no one will want to read them when i finally launch the thing, so instead here are some random things i've been doing lately/found on my desktop.

you guessed it - more character design for my comic. sunday and thursday have already been posted because they're part of the main crew, but here's their ridiculous, dysfunctional family. clifford blaise is a noble (some sort of duke, i think. still mulling it over) in one of the countries of ides. they're all lions, so the family is very clearly based on a lion pride. the youngest (sun and thurs) aren't really going to get anything good from their arrangement, so they ran off to be 10x more awesome.

top two are jimmy, a gang leader, and his annoying distant cousin jacob that he ends up saddled with.

bottom four are the pirate captain, cain's main officers on his ship (the revelations). they are based on the four horsemen of the apocalypse. these designs are still being finalized, but these are the animals they're going to be based on (a texas blind salamander, a locust, a wolverine and an owl). death's cloak was definitely inspired by the giant one that my friend zack wears around, just cause it's big and victorian looking and he needed some sort of cloak.

here's the majority of the planning i've done for my senior project this semester. i'm working hard to flesh out this world. i still have a few more things to name though - rivers, lakes, mountain ranges, major cities... and so on. i'm planning on designing many, many more characters as i go along, too.

the name of this planet is "ides" by the way. it's a smaller planet than earth, which is why the oceans are much smaller.

i took a screen printing class this past semester, and while i don't have photos of the actual finished prints, i do have the digital positives/colour studies that i did for them.

for our first assignment we could do whatever we wanted. the second was the prompt "what's wrong with the art world, a diagram for study." the third was "inside, outside" and it had to be double sided, so each figure was on a separate side of the paper. the final was "your art is…" which i took to mean a piece that looks like it fits with the rest of my work.

two weeks into my winter break, so i figured it's time to upload a few left over things from the end of last semester. here are the comics that i did in my sequential class, including the finished pages that i posted the lines for previously.

the first section of comics is my steampunk one. the second set is for an assignment where we had to write a 100-word story and then do a 2-page comic based on it. the third set was our first assignment - two comics based on the poem ozymandias by shelley and a shakespearean sonnet (i don't remember which sonnet i chose, but the sonnet is the first in this sequence of comics). the last is a 5-page comic we had to do based on an autobiographic story.

the start of my last story idea for first semester of senior project. this story has been in the works for ages, and probably has some of my favourite characters that i've designed in it (it probably isn't hard to see who i accidentally end up drawing the most).

this story is heavily inspired by the kurt vonnegut quote "true terror is to wake up one morning and discover that your high school class is running the country." it takes place in an apocalyptic alternate reality where one day, everyone over the age of 21 is killed. the country ends up being run like a high school popularity contest, where anyone who is "different" or "weird" or "not normal" is ostracized and often persecuted. cooper and his small gang try very hard to take these leaders down.

so here's some more character design, except this time it's for my sequential art class. our assignment is to design a marketable character and make a 5-page comic about it. i'm still working on the comic, but here are the designs.

my story is about the crew of a steampunk-inspired airship delivery service. the introductory comic is told from the perspective of taciturn, the betta fish character who happens to be based on my own betta fish. and sebastian is based on my childhood dog that passed away a few years ago. his character is recently married, and i'm very tempted to name his wife belle, just to be a dork.

after i graduate i plan on starting a webcomic, and it's entirely possible that this is the idea i end up going with for it.

after i finished my myth u characters, i went onto fleshing out nottingham's story. this semester is really great for me, i'm actually coming up with plotlines for sets of characters that had none in the past. i really want to sit down and make a 'paper doll' type thing for wren, since he/she reincarnates so much over history - i would get to draw all sorts of historical outfits which would make the almost-history major in me very happy.

(i'm also really happy that i finally sat down and drew reference for hollom's tattoos. i always forget what they look like.)

EDIT: i finished the final illustration on this one. it might still need a bit more work, but i think it shows the real basis of this story. wren and nott are pretty much just two guys who get drunk and goof off and avoid all responsibilities. and one just happens to be a disheartened deity.

for one of my senior project classes, i'm working on my character designs for different story ideas that i have. what i really hope to accomplish this semester is making my characters look separate from each other, since my style tends to make them all look rather similar.

the first story i'm working on is my 'myth u' one. since each character have three distinct outfits, i decided to make a sort of 'paper doll' base for each to work off of, and then just draw the outfits on top of that. this is something that i might continue doing throughout the semester, as it's a good way to get the outfit idea down on paper and also a good reference for any colour illustrations i plan on doing in the future.

inception was definitely my favourite movie of the summer, i saw it three times. eames and arthur have not only taken over my head, but they're also taken over my usual internet haunts.

this illustration was inspired by this hilarious website: http://arthurandeamesstealthings.com/ (right down to tom hardy's redic 13 year old girl myspace photo. he's the most insane, hilarious actor i've seen in a long time. i like how he just doesn't seem to take himself too seriously.)

i've been working on some different, more cartoony styles before i start my last year at pratt. i wanted a simple, slightly more geometric way to differentiate between characters. since the main characters from my 'myth u' storyline are so different from each other, i figured they'd be the best test subjects.

morris (kappa) is made to be round, george (tengu/gryphon) is meant to be a bit long and spindly, and corin (kitsune) is all points.

i also drew them in different types of outfits. morris is in a variation of their school uniform, george is in his every day street clothes and corin is in his traditional dress.

i recently finished the hbo miniseries the pacific and i absolutely loved it. i'm a major history nerd, so show me a good wwii story and i'll eat it up. snafu and sledge were my favourites, so i decided to take a cap of snafu i found going through the pacific tag on tumblr (this tumblr to be specific) and do a speed painting. all together it took me a little over an hour and a half or so. i'm still working on my speed-painting skills, this doesn't look enough like rami malek for me to be completely satisfied with it. but it will do for now.

i've been so unproductive since i finished the semester and moved into my new apartment. i've been sketching a little, but never anything worth finishing. this sketch i did during the end of the semester and i decided that i had to do some sort of art, so i finished it.

gull is a character i've been working on for a bit, i don't have too much worked out about him yet, but i've been itching to character design and just have no proper ideas to go off of.

the deviantart artist kalamu posted a shading tutorial that looked really neat, so i tried it and i really like the way it turns out looking. i might play around with it more in the future.

something i did for my digital painting class. it's still early in the semester, so everything we're doing in class right now is stuff that i've been doing for years. needless to say, it's a bit boring. but i'm really looking forward to it picking up.

my assignment was to take a sketch we had, scan it in, separate the lines from the background, add colour to the lines and colour beneath and whatnot. like i said, pretty basic stuff. but it gave me a chance to use something i was already planning to do as a homework assignment.

here's cooper in the final "book" of my apocalyptic storyline. he lets the back of his hair grow back and cuts the front off. he and tenenbaum get jobs at a boring old convenience store, hence his uniform shirt. he ditches the kilt in an attempt to lay low. shit goes down at the end of the second to last book. i'm just saying. hopefully one day you guys will end up seeing this as a proper comic.

cooper is also my favourite. always.

a doodle i did while watching supernatural one day that i decided to touch up.

wren isn't religious in the slightest, despite the fact that he's a close personal friend of a deity that exists in all time, but i personally love religious imagery. hence the halo and the pose. slightly art nouveau inspired because i love that too. the colours in the background are meant to represent sunrise and sunset, symbolizing wren's constant death and rebirth within nott's storyline.

if i had better handwriting, the little ribbon bit would say "who wants to live forever."

two sets of character designs for two different ideas i have for my children's book class. they haven't been through crit yet, so any of them may be subject to change. but i do enjoy them the way they are right now.

once i chose between the two of them, i'm probably going to end up posting more working images of the book itself until I have the dummy finished at the end of the semester.

i love those pigeons at the bottom.

i do a lot of sketches that i really like, but they never are seen out of my sketchbook because they're basically just plain, static busts and i do far too many of those. faces are my favourite to draw, along with hands, so most of my stuff is pretty similar. but i've been sketching a pretty good deal over this break, so i decided to compile some of my favourites together in one image since i probably wouldn't upload them otherwise.

from top to bottom, left to right:

-one of the characters from my storyline furre high, tearah's private school attending friend, lacy. i have fun drawing her hair.

-merlin from the bbc's series of the same name, because i am far far too fond of colin morgan. i was watching prince of egypt and i swear that moses looks exactly like a scruffier, cartoon version of colin morgan. same facial structure and everything.

-fluffy canine, cartoon version of myself, who I don't draw enough. i love big fluffy tails and big paws.

-a little bat i doodled while watching some episodes of supernatural.

-fifth doctor, because i apparently draw him far too much.

-my colin morgan kick gave me the urge to watch the episode midnight of doctor who, because that's where i first saw him anyway. i love jethro. apparently there's a life size cardboard cut out of him. who wouldn't want a six foot emo kid!colin morgan, i know i do.

-i really just wanted to draw my outfit that i wore yesterday. the wonderful shirt design is by emmy cicierega.

-more emo kid!colin morgan. playing around with styles.

-tezrl. i've been struggling with his design for a long time, but now i think i'm finally happy with it. he's still a firefly, but now he's got some sort of mustelidae in him.

the tenth doctor's final episode just premiered, thus ending david tennant's wonderful time in the role. i've invested far too much time into this series, and david tennant was the first doctor i ever watched. i couldn't resist finishing up an old sketch i had to contribute to his big send off.

i am incredibly excited for the next actor stepping into the role, though. from the little we've been shown, he looks fantastic.

"Cole was the last person to take up residence at Solar Heights. Because of this, he was always slightly ostracised from the others. Eventually, he was asked to move out of his room in order to extend the kitchen and he got moved to the dark, cold basement. Cole is moody and spends a lot of his time alone, listening to music - even Eaton spends less time alone than he does. He’s now just waiting for the day when they actually kick him out of the house. He knows it must be coming sometime."

"Calder is quite brainy and very good at mathematics. It’s because of this that he tends to look down at the other boarders in the house, but he’s nowhere near as cold as Eaton. When not reading or doing some sort of work, Calder enjoys swimming and is a lifeguard at a local swimming pool."

"Compared to the other boarders, Eaton is probably the most bland and boring. He’s very cold in temperament, so it’s fitting that he should always find himself cold in terms of body temperature. He’s often seen dressed in warm clothing, if anyone sees him at all. He spends a lot of his time sleeping."

"The first thing people tend to notice about Sherwin is the “wine stain” birthmark over his eye. He’s grown used to this over time. The second thing people notice is how large he is. His size might sometimes intimidate others, but he’s basically harmless. He is often jovial and good natured, and tries to keep peace when Aidan might be busy. He sports a cast thanks to a car accident he was in with someone called Shoemaker not too long ago. He’s something of a pack rat and his room is very cluttered."

In addition to being ridiculously friendly with everyone, she also leaves little trinkets in everyone else’s rooms and won’t take them back. She is overly fond of Aldred and shows it. Often."

"Bryce is small and quick, and also rather eccentric, even more so than the other boarders. He has a hard time staying in one place for a long period of time. This may be due to a slight balance problem he has that causes him to wobble slightly when standing still. He also collects iron things and has a large quantity of them strewn about his room."

for my astronomy and illustration final projects, i chose to take characteristics of the planets (+the sun and pluto) and turn them into human characters. i gave them all names (that mean something related to what they're based on) and backgrounds and personalities. i also developed a storyline for them that goes like this:

"Solar Heights is a boarding house on Milky Way Blvd owned by Aidan Steren. He inherited it from his family and turned it into what it has become today. Though it may seem odd to find a middle-aged man running a boarding house on his own, Solar Heights runs very smoothly. The nearby apartment complex, Andromeda, is always looking to take over the building, knock it down, and turn it into another branch of apartments, but Aidan refuses to let it go without a fight.

It has three floors and a basement. The third floor is one whole suite occupied by Aidan himself. On the floor below lives Bryce, Eleanor, Gina and Aldred. The ground floor is occupied by Sherwin, Odelette, Eaton and Calder. Cole lives in the basement. The boarders all have their own odd little quirks and tend to butt heads ever so often."

this is the character based on the sun, aidan steren. here is what i wrote about him.

"Aidan is the landlord of the Solar Heights boarding house. He is older than all of his boarders and works hard to keep them in check. For the most part, they usually follow his rules and orders and respect him. He mostly keeps to himself and doesn’t leave his suite much. If the boarders need him, they usually go to him."

nottingham has become one of my favourite characters since i made him up over the summer and i've been developing him more. somehow, he ended up with a sort of deity form, pictured here. i'm super fond of drawing the both of them. i'm trying very hard to place a story around him, but it's proving to be difficult. i'm sure i'll come up with something eventually though, he's fun to think about.

this is my favourite thing that i did in type last year. we had to take some sort of text in the public domain and design a book for part of it using only one font. i chose a midsummer night's dream because it's one of my favourite works by shakespeare. my font was baskerville because it's lovely.

as any of you doctor who fans might know, the black guardian trilogy was finally released on dvd in august, and then here in the the states earlier this month. i made it a point to make sure mine were delivered exactly on that release date and thoroughly enjoyed the wonderful amount of special features. i couldn't pass up a chance to draw good old turlough in the midst of all that. re-watching this trilogy always makes my turlough love kick right back up again and i end up doodling him everywhere. i usually end up making him pretty camp, but i don't think there's any denying that turlough was anything but. and i had always been wanting to include his lovely stripey socks in one drawing of him, so there we go.

if you're wondering why exactly i'm uploading so many things out of the blue, i'm trying to put together a portfolio for an internship fair on friday so i'm finishing some doodles i've been doing in classes. mostly world civ because it's boring sometimes.

this one really just came out of nowhere and is pretty much me having fun. i want a long cigarette holder.
